Overwhelmed By Clutter
by Shirley Ann Wallker

If walking into a room make you feel overwhelmed, embarrassed, or uncomfortable then this article is for you.

If anyone knows about clutter, it's me. I am an elementary school teacher. If you are a teacher or know someone who teach, then you know that we accumulate a lot of stuff over the years.

My most frustrating time is in the summer when school is out and I have to bring things home.

Many teachers have problems organizing because we have a difficult time letting go of things. We tend to keep everything because we may need it next year or because it has sentimental value.

A good idea for getting rid of things that you think you may need at a later time is to ask yourself "did I use this item last year?" If the answer is "NO", then you probably won't use the item in the future either.

Here are 5 easy tips to help you get organized this Summer.

  1. Paper is a huge source of clutter for many homes. It's important to have a specific area for paper as it come into your house to keep it from getting out of control.
  2. Start by working on the clutter for 5 minutes a day. Usually you can talk yourself into working on a task for 5 minutes.
  3. Take one part of the clutter and work on that. By working on one part of the clutter, you can progress quickly and you want feel so overwhelmed. For instance in the kitchen, organize one cabinet or drawer at a time. In the closet organize one section of clothes at a time. If the clothes doesn't fit, or you haven't worn them for a year get rid of them!!!!
  4. It is also helpful to put all the stuff you want to get rid of on the floor. Go through it and separate it into two piles. Then get two bags. Put the things you want to save in one of them, the stuff you want to sell or give away in the other bag. Put the other stuff in the trash can.
  5. The most important thing to remember is to get into a routine. Sort all the paper that comes into your house in a specific area. Schedule at least 5 minutes a day to work on your task until it is completed. Organize your kitchen drawers and closets weekly.
