Six Steps to Avoid Procrastination
by Clarice Mertz

"Procrastination is a dance between the brain and the situation." Says Timothy Pychyl, director of the Procrastination Research Group at Carleton University in Ottawa.

A good example of this dance was last year when my daughter called to tell me she was organizing her drawers. I was impressed, so I asked: "What gave you the inspiration to do such a boring task?"
She answered: "Well, I should be studying for a test."
We both laughed.
My daughter is too responsible to be doing nothing instead of her schoolwork. Therefore, her mind tricked her into doing something she did not even like doing. She knew what was happening, but it is not always clear. Some times procrastination put us in state of limbo, we know something is bothering us, but we are not exactly sure of what it is.

Procrastination makes us feels guilty, stressed, and sometimes confused; guilty and stressed when we know we are procrastinating, confused when we donŐt actually realize whatŐs going on. Either way, procrastination is a habit that leaves us with a bad feeling about ourselves.

Here are six steps to avoid procrastination:

  1. Plan your day.
Planning your day and establishing priorities really works.
  2. Believe you can change
I believe in myself, and I believe in you too. We are always changing, sometimes we change for the better, and sometimes we change for the worse. So, letŐs be positive about our changes and choose to change for the better.
  3. Maybe itŐs something else.
If you attempt step one and find out you are still procrastinating find out why. It could be fear, insecurity, feeling overwhelmed, or maybe you just do not like doing it. After you find the reasons of your procrastination, make a plan to overcome whatever it is.
  4. The twenty-minute plan.
Decide to work for twenty minutes each day on your project. After starting, it is very possible you will do more then twenty minutes.
  5. Delegate.
Delegating is a good option when it comes to procrastination.
  6. Do not expect to be perfect.
Any progress is a good thing stay positive.

Be sure to reward yourself. Keep in mind you are working on breaking a habit. Reward yourself with something you enjoy, this will help keep you motivated, and help conquer a bad habit.

Often life is a dance between our mind and different situations. We need to remember to learn the rhythm and not step on our own feet.
