Garbage-can overflowing or is your Carbon Footprint a little overwhelming when it comes to trash? Not a problem, Trendy Environmental Warrior! The amount of things you can recycle is abundant. We aren't talking just cans and bottles here...so lets get you started on what isn't trash.
Toothbrushes, not for reuse. Yes, toothbrushes are recycling bin friendly, but don't worryÑyour brush isn't going to be used by someone else. Instead it will be reincarnated as a part of a boardwalk or a picnic table. How nice is that?
Sneakers, three pieces for sport stars. Thanks to Nike, you can send in your dirty old sneakers to their Reuse-a-Shoe program. The rubber becomes track for running, the fabric is padding under basketball courts, and foam goes to tennis courts. Oh, Nike, keeping even the most athletic of us green.
Cell Phones. I had like three of these hiding aboutÑnot sure about throwing them away. Well, I was right, while phone parts can be recycledÑif your phone still works, it can be used for a greater good. A phone for underprivileged to dial 911 when they are in danger, go see Charitable Recycling. If you want to support your troops consider Cell Phones for Soldiers, which gives our troops a chance to call their families.
Fluorescent light bulbs. Did you know these suckers were considered hazardous? So when are done with them, either give your local recycle center a call, or head on over to lamprecycle.org and learn how they revamp these burnt out bulbs.
Send in your wine corks. So after some quick research, I learned about the Cork Oak. It's a tree that gets its thick bark stripped down for corks, not killing the tree. Now another green thing about bottle corks is that you can send them to companies like Yemm & Hart, or ReCork America to be turned into building materials.
Eye Glasses for Africa. Now these are reusable, there are several ministries and even a few companies, like LensCrafters' OneSight Program, that will take your old glasses, clean them up and send them off to people who need them, whether it is here or across the big water to say...Africa.
Roofing to Road. Tired of potholes on your road? Guess what, Asphalt Roofing shingles can be reborn into to roadways. Now, most the companies you find are probably going to want them in bulk (especially if you want to get paid for them) but if you have them, don't chuck them. Just head over to shinglerecycling.org and learn more
Clothing, this one should be obvious. This one should have been a lot earlier up on the list, but we all know what to do with gently used clothing. Goodwill, Salvation Army, donation are around back. (Just nothing gross...you know what I'm talking about)
It's not Christmas anymore. If you have old Christmas lights filling up your basement, then check out holidayleds.com, send them boxes of old lights and they'll send you a nice coupon for some new lights
There are 100s of items that can be recycled, but we've reached the last item of this list and its one you get all the time. Phone Books! Yes, those whoppers can be transformed into new phonebooks! Just check out yellowpages.com and learn about how they are working with Keep America Beautiful to do just that.
