How To Organize Your Bills in 5 Easy Steps
by Clarice Mertz

Paying bills is never a fun thing to do, especially if you are on a tight budget. However, if you get organized, it can be a lot easer, it can improve the way you think about yourself and the way people think about you. Organizing your bills will give you peace of mind, increase your credit rating, and save you time and money.

  1. Your designated bill payment place.
Start by choosing a place in your home to pay your bills. This space should be easy to access, with a visible place to display your bills. If you do not have a specific place where you can pay your bills, you can choose the kitchen table as example; just make sure it is cleaned-up on a regular basis and before you start. Keep everything you need in hand, like checks books, envelopes, calculator, stamps, letter open, pens, pencil, and address labels. In case you are paying your bills at the kitchen table, keep all you need in a box. It can be a beautiful box or a simple shoebox. Having all you need in one box will make this task much easier.
  2. Toss the clutter.
Get in the habit of going through you mail every day and throw out the junk. It will take just few minutes a day, and when the time comes to pay your bills you will not feel overwhelmed by the pile in front of you. It makes a big difference.
  3. Get friendly with your bills collector.
Make a list of your regular bills. If you choose to pay two times a month, break the bills down into two groups where each group total is approximately equal to the other. Decide on two dates during the month when it makes sense to pay. Most people choose a date around the first of the month and another around the 15. Call each company on the list, to arrange a payment date that fits your schedule. Most companies will work with you. Schedule time about 6-7 days ahead of the due date to write checks and mail your bills, to allow time for postage, handling, and processing. For example, if your bills are due on August 1, send your payment on July 24. The bills that are due August 15 send on August 9. Therefore, each month on the 9 and the 24, you can pay the bills your way.
  4. Schedule
After you arrange the best day to pay, choose a time during the day that works for you. For example, after dinner, or maybe at lunchtime. Whatever, time you choose, schedule it and treat it as a priority. As a priority you will gain control over your bills, rather then other way around.
  5. Arm yourself with information.
Make a list of all your financial information, and keep it hand in your designated bill payment place.
    • Make a list of your bank account with phone numbers.
    • Have a list of user names and passwords.
    • Have a list of credit cards number, inspirations dates, credit limit, and phone numbers.
    • Have a list of phone numbers of all you current bills.
These 5 easy steps can do a lot for you, not only in a material way but in an emotional too. Keeping your bills organized really pays.
