Awesome, I see you have made it to another edition of "Wait, you can recycle that!" Good Job, Trendy Environmental WarriorÑtogether we will cut your garbage overflow in half. Here are ten more things you probably didnÕt know you could recycle.
Water Water Everywhere...not so much the case. Yes, a great fear instilled into us as kids from shows like Sesame Street, is that water will one day be gone. That is why some clever inventors have created ways to save water such as connecting sinks to toilet tanks, that way the water you waste is used forÑwell, your waste. Pretty clever.
Dry Wall away! With memories of patching a hole (So that no one would know it was there) in my mind, I am reminded of the amount of dry wall I had left. It felt like such a waste---but do not fear, Warriors, Dry Wall = Recyclable. Just give companies like USA Gypsum a call, and theyÕll tear it down and recycle it for you
No more wire hangers! (I tried not to say it). Clothing hangers seem to have problems when it comes to being recycledÑas in people donÕt do it or it is just a waste of energy to burn them all down. So consider this: If you have wire hangers, send them to your local dry cleaners. They will wash them, and reuse them. (Maybe give you a discount if you smile.)
Junk Mail Be Gone! You probably know junk mail can be recycled, even though only half of it ever does. It must be the strong need to get it away before you even look at it. So the solution? Stop it before it gets to you. Visit the Direct Marketing AssociationÕs website to control what kind of mail you get, or register to opt out (optoutprescreen.com) to keep credit cards and insurance companies at bay. No junk mail is just as good as recycled junk mail.
Printer Ink IsnÕt Recyclable. But its Cartridges are. Well, I canÕt say thatÕs true but I assume youÕll be recycling the empty ink cartridges, not the thirty-dollar ink. There are many ways to recycle these cartridges, whether you just refill them, or you send them to a company that pays you for themÑhowever, I like the good old stand by: the company they came from. HP is nice enough to provide its retailers with a way to ship empty printer ink cartridges back to them just visit hp.com for more info.
Cardboard boxes (For people who need boxes). This is another item which obviously can be recycled, but anyone who is going through a move would thank you to not throw them in a dumpster. Donate them to a shelter, throw them up on craigslistÑit doesnÕt matter. A box is a terrible thing to waste.
DVDs, the bane of the recycling world. Disgusting story, IÕve worked for some companies that handled DVDS for lets sayÑrental purposes. Now production companies would send us like 200 or 1000 copies of these moviesÉand each week, weÕd destroy at least 1000 DVDs. The data was removed, and weÕd plunge it into the garbage. We had to, because it was illegal to keep these movies. However, companies like GreenDisk would gladly recycle that bulk dateless bundle for us. Instead, millions of DVDs rest at your landfill, poisoning the ground. Huzzah.
CDS and Games (and DVDs again). Last tip, turned into a rantÑso lets try again. If you have some old CDs with music like the Spice Girls, or some movies you just donÕt wantÉGo to some local stores and start selling. Places like Gamestop, Trade N Play, and Blockbuster all buy back. DonÕt worry about scratches as there are even companies that can refurbish and still buy.
Sports gear, R.I.P. Growing up playing baseball, and then soccer, I seem to remember that my baseball bats, and my soccer cleats had to be replaced often. (Must be something about growing.) So, if you have the same problem, you might want to consider not only Goodwill, but also places like Play It Again Sports. Remember the key concept of recycling: Just because your finished with it, doesnÕt mean its finished.
Number 10, it has to be a big oneÑand it is, Candy Wrappers. (Dedicated to a friend) Candy Wrappers have a problem, no waste management company wants to recycle them. The solution? Well, fashion of course. High scale handbags made by the Ecoist have been around since 2004, and they are made completely from wrappers. But since they donÕt seem to take donations, the solution is simpleÑmake your own. Yes, the world of Blogging and online tutorials can give you 200-dollar fashion with a simple Google search.
