Create a Good Habit in Six Steps
by Clarice Mertz

I truly believe we can change anything we want in our lives, if we commit ourselves to making that change. If we fail it is because at some point during the journey we had a change of heart.

Life is made of good and bad habits, and changing the bad ones can create the life and home we dream about. For instance each time we put our keys in a wrong place we are choosing (unconsciously) to create stress when we cannot find them. It is much easier if we put our keys in the same place each time. Self-discipline leads to good habits and good habits eliminate stress.

Here are six steps that you can use to change something in your life.

  1. Be honest with yourself
First ask yourself: "Do I really want to make a change?" Without deep commitment the self-discipline needed to be successful is not reinforced. If you answered no, make peace with yourself. If you answered yes, be sure you are ready to make a commitment
  2. Believe you can change
I believe in myself, and I believe in you too. We are always changing, sometimes we change for the better, and sometimes we change for the worse. So, letŐs be positive about our changes and choose to change for the better.
  3. Work on one change at time
Start small, do it for forty days and it will become a habit.
  4. Tell others what you want to change
You will think twice if your reputation is on the line. They can also remind us of our goals.
  5. Do not criticize yourself.
    See rule # 2.
  6. Reward yourself
My favorite. If you have decided to work on something, reward yourself after 10 days of consecutive success, you do not need to wait until the forty days is finished to do something nice for yourself.

If we are honest with ourselves, if we believe in ourselves, and if we work and love ourselves, there is no way that we can fail. We can change our whole life with small steps, steps that little by little will create a life free of stress and turmoil. Just remember to be caring and patient with yourself, even when you fail.
