Leg Power
by Wil Wood

So, you are taking the leap, Green Warrior? Looking for the best way to cut down on your car emissions decided public transportation isnÕt for you? Good, in fact Great. It takes a lot of determination to bike to work or walk to the store. Be proud, you are changing for the better of the world. Lets see what we can do to help.

  1. DonÕt overwhelm yourself. You are taking the first steps and thatÕs great. DonÕt immediately throw your car into the last resort pile. Starting small is the key here. Can you walk to a friendÕs house? Is the movie theater with in biking distance? Remember, baby steps!
  2. Is getting around by foot, really for you? I spent my younger years in the middle of nowhere, I could bike to my friendÕs house, but there wasnÕt even a bus stop to take us anywhere special. If you need your car, that is fine. The plan is to cut down gas emissions, not boost ped egg sales.
  3. Be Prepared. Just as you have key things in your car, like a spare tire, you will want to have some handy items on you if you decide to take a greener approach. If you are biking, you should have a sturdy bike lock. If you are going shopping, a backpack might be useful. Legs give out? Having your cell programmed with a taxi service may be handy.
  4. DonÕt get caught in the storm. If you are going out without a vehicle, you will want to check the forecast first. No one at your office will enjoy you if you are soaked; rain or sweat.
  5. Learn from the past. No one wants to talk about it, but itÕs the facts of life...the world can be dangerous. If you want your family to be less car dependant make sure you and your kids travel in well-lit, well-populated, well-known areas.
  6. Never alone. Previous tip reminded me of how boring it was to walk home from school every day aloneÑit also reminded me of how much faster the trip went when I had friends along. So, Warriors, Buddy up! The idea of a park and walk might become the latest trend for all your coworkers.
  7. Ohhh WeÕre halfway thereÉ. ohhh--sorry sorry, IÕll stop singing. But a tip does come to mind. If you canÕt walk to work, can you walk to a bus stop, or drive to a parking lot? Remember Warriors, just because you are trying to be hardcore, doesnÕt mean your life has to be hard. (PS: Buses have bike racks for a reason.)
  8. If only their was an invention on the side of the road for walking. Wait a second, there is! Sidewalks! You probably already know to use sidewalks, but you probably never thought about calling your local government up and asking them to put in a sidewalk. Well, I think now is that time.
  9. So...what are you wearing? Mm...No, IÕm being serious. DonÕt plan to get far if you arenÕt dressed for it. Would you rather carry tennis shoes all day or walk in high heels?
  10. Man without a mission. I like to walk and I like to bike. I usually have nowhere to go, but I enjoy it. ItÕs healthy, and a change of pace from my normal day. Think of it as a way of meditating, and distressing your life. That is a big motivator when it comes to not taking the car.
